Forestry Certifications 

Third-party forestry certifications provide structure to determine and recognize well-managed and sustainable forestry practices. These certifications provide professional standards for companies to operate under to achieve environmentally sustainable business. The certifications are also designed to provide consumer confidence that the products they purchase support environmentally sound practices – from the tree seedling through the product manufacturing and delivery processes. 

For PM Company, being certified means that the paper fiber it uses can be verifiably traced from a well-managed forest to a certified paper fiber producer, and from the fiber producer to PM Company’s plant where it is segregated and then converted into a certified paper roll. All PM Company’s certified paper rolls are clearly marked pursuant to a set of strict guidelines and standards.

The Certification Process

Certification involves a detailed on-site audit of a company’s processes and procedures by a third party certification firm working on behalf of the sponsoring environmental organization. 

Being certified can have two meanings:

      • First, a company’s internal processes and procedures can be certified that they track and account for the chain of custody of certified paper fiber from the forest through to the final product’s customer invoicing
      • Secondly, certification can apply to a specific SKU or product from a company with certified processes

A company can be certified without having any certified products, so it is important to review and understand individual environmental claims closely. Additionally, a company’s certifications must be audited and updated once a year to remain in effect.

PM Company has two different forestry certifications, an achievement that took a coordinated team effort. In addition to creating an extensive set of policies and procedures as described above, Purchasing made numerous plant visits to review the certification policies and procedures of key fiber suppliers to further ensure that the paper fiber PM Company purchases is indeed certified.

BPA FREE Thermal Paper Rolls

PM Company "Perfection" Thermal Paper Rolls are BPA free.

BPA or Bisphenol-A, is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. In particular, BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles, baby bottles, and cups. It can also be found in certain thermal paper products, such as cash register receipts.*

In 2010, The Food and Drug Administration reversed its position on the safety of Bisphenol-A, saying it now has concerns about health risks. Growing scientific evidence has linked the chemical to a host of problems, including cancer, sexual dysfunction and heart disease. Federal officials said they are particularly concerned about BPA’s effect on the development of fetuses, infants and young children.**

On October 5, 2011 California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill banning the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, from baby bottles and toddler drinking cups. The legislation would ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups made or sold after July 1, 2013.***

Kroger, the nation’s largest supermarket chain announced in May 2011 that it would stop using thermal paper receipts containing BPA.****

Whether for public image or the fact that many think it is the right thing to do, every day more companies and end users are requesting BPA-free thermal paper receipt rolls.

Recycling Program

An example of our sustainable business practices is our recycling program. In 2003, PM Company began an initiative to recycle all manufacturing and office waste. Today, PM recycles over 450 tons of waste per year, saving 7,650 trees and decreasing 293 trucks from going to the landfill each year.

PM Company has historically strived to support sustainable operating practices. The reason our company and employees do this is that it makes good community sense.

 

Recycled Cores and Cartons

PM offers 100% recycled cores, and the cartons used in our U.S. manufactured goods are 100% recycled with up to 40% PCW.

 

Degradable Deposit Bags

PM Company offers two lines of Degradable Tamper-Evident Deposit Bags. Plastic deposit bags are one-use, disposable products. Due to this, we feel it is important for as many of these items as possible to have a degradable option that will deteriorate much faster in land-fills.
